ABOUT ME
Name: Shane Halaska
A.C.T. Certified Personal Trainer
Born: October 27, 1972
Location: Calgary, Alberta, Canada. A little about me... I grew up being your typical boy, causing ruckus, getting dirty and playing sports. I never really paid much attention to exercise growing up, however I was naturally athletic and coordinated (Thanks mom.) and so I was a pretty good athlete. It wasn’t until I got into high school that I got interested in using weights.
I noticed a few of the other kids were pretty muscular and had been using weights prior to getting into Grade 10. They had great physiques. They were strong and they were better at sports than I was. Yes, and they were noticed by the girls much more than I was. This, as you can imagine had a huge impact on me. I wanted what they had. It was at this point I began reading all of the bodybuilding and exercise magazines I could get my hands on.
I was excited to get started. I can still remember riding my BMX bike 20km to the city and bringing that 100lbs of vinyl Weider weights home. Talk about determination and desire! I set those weights up in my parents shed as soon as I got home. I was going to be like Arnold Schwarzenegger! That was more than 20 years ago, but I remember it like it was yesterday.
When I began training, I wanted to be a Pro bodybuilder like in all the magazines, but after a time I lost interest in that obsession and focused mainly on getting a physique I could be proud of. Not just satisfied with average, I’d only be happy being one of the best. I succeeded and built myself into a finely tuned machine, with power and stamina to spare.
My sports performance skyrocketed. I was getting a lot of attention from women and I was feeling fantastic from working out (Endorphins are great). My confidence soared and I learned that anything I undertook, even outside of sports, I would succeed at, as long as I worked hard enough and believed in myself enough. I owe a lot of positive experiences in my life to working out and I’m certain there will be many more to come.
I followed the workout routines from all the magazines and at first they worked. Of course they worked, give a beginner any exercise program and he’ll grow some muscle. But after a while my progressed slowed, then I’d stopped growing. I was getting tired, I was over-training. Why? The workouts were just way too long. Most of them were for bodybuilders or athletes who were on steroids and could recover much faster than a natural athlete. Those routines were for guys who had time to train 2-3 hours a day. I didn’t have that time and even if I did, I had better things to do than hang out at the gym all day. I had places to go, people to see.
Needless to say, I stopped buying the fitness and muscle magazines a long time ago. Not only were they full of crazy long routines, they seemed more focused on selling the next junk supplement than providing quality information on training.
In this time I never stopped learning. I learned some from the magazines, but I learned a great deal more from the massive library of books on weight training and exercise I had accumulated.
I learned and studied and I applied all the lessons from that vast knowledge until I knew just about everything there is to know on the subject. I could create workout routines for any goal that I was after, and I knew they would work. I also learned how to achieve any workout goal in far less time than what all the exercise magazines would have you believe.
If I could sum up the great truth about workout routines in a sentence it would be this:
Quality over quantity! I learned this lesson after many years of training and have been following this philosophy for the past 20 years. Hard work, intensity, using the best exercises, recruiting the maximum amount of muscle fibre and discipline are all part of that philosophy. After spending some time here, you may just adopt a similar philosophy.
Anyway, enough about me.
